ELIZABETH RELEASES NEW VIDEO FOR 'HERE' + ANNOUNCES SUPPORTS FOR AUSTRALIAN ALBUM TOUR

March 02, 2020 by Our Golden Friend

Today Elizabeth shares the video for her glistening pop anthem 'here', from her critically acclaimed 2019 album The Wonderful World of Nature. The video features snapshots of Elizabeth's time in Los Angeles last year and was crafted by the artist herself.

Of the video, Elizabeth says:

This video is my chaotic summer energy. There is footage from my personal collection of travels, nudes, crying spells and more. It’s about the division between the public and the private, how sometimes it can feel like the space between these things is collapsed by a compulsion to share what’s “real”. This is all that’s real for now, enjoy, I love you x"

~Click to watch the video for Here~

In support of her critically-acclaimed album The Wonderful World of Nature, Elizabeth & her astounding 7-piece band will be heading to the major East Coast cities to launch the album in March.

Joining Elizabeth in Sydney at The Vanguard on Friday March 6th will be Greenwave Beth, Solo Career & Baby Velvet. The band will then head to Brisbane's Black Bear Lodge on Saturday March 7th and will be supported by Phoebe Sinclair and Chakra Efendi. Upon arrival in her home city of Melbourne, Elizabeth will be joined at Estonian House for Brunswick Music Festival on Monday March 16th  by Eilish Gilligan, Katie Dey & Chitra.

The Wonderful World of Nature provided a new pop cocktail through the female gaze – with an antagonist wielding shimmering melodies and soaring sounds as her weapons, wiping away the mascara and stepping into a cocktail gown.

Elizabeth delivered a new kind of heartbreak album in 2019 with The Wonderful World of Nature casting herself as the antagonist wielding pop songs as weapons, she wipes away her running mascara and escapes a destruction of her own making. A new patron saint of sad girls, Elizabeth is a glamorous tragic, a queer pop anti-heroine holding a curtain of glittering melodies and catchy veneers over ugly truths.

MERK SHARES NEW SINGLE & VIDEO H.N.Y.B

March 02, 2020 by Our Golden Friend

Today we are thrilled to be collaborating with Humblebrag Records & AWAL to promote the release of H.N.Y.B by Merk. H.N.Y.B is the new single from New Zealand artist and producer Merk. The title is the acronym for the songs ear-worm chorus Happy New Year Baby, and reminiscent of artists like Phoenix and Porches, the songs stark minimalism and hypnotic, woozy synths provide the counter point to the sweetness in the reflective lyrics and vocal.

~ Listen to 'H.N.Y.B' here ~

Describing the song, Merk says “This track is an exercise in minimalism for me. I was wanting to see how long you could go with doing very little while keeping it interesting. That’s why a lot of the song is just a very basic drumbeat, bass, and vocals with no reverb or anything to hide behind. I was very inspired by Serge Gainsbourg's 'Histoire de Melody Nelson' when recording this track. His dry and minimal production makes him sound effortlessly cool, and it gives a feeling of suspense and rawness that keeps you hooked."

He also shares the video for H.N.Y.B, an equally hypnotic DIY celebration with a surrealist twist directed in a blissful collaboration between director Martin Salgadin and Merk himself. Together they encapsulate the song capturing both the celestial beauty and terror of the quiet passing of time.

"This song has become a more general reflection on time passing without you noticing, and how whether we like it or not we’re getting older. New Years just happens to be a time when people are musing over this with all their personal reflection and goal setting”

Video Credits

Directors: Martin Sagadin & Mark Perkins (Merk)

Production Assistant: Reuben Biggelaar

Made with the help and support of NZ on Air.

Of the video that accompanies H.N.Y.B Merk says "I think there's a beautiful tension in being a DIY producer making pop music. You are searching for these vast sounds, while being confined to a bedroom studio. That's one reason (among others) for the sun & moon murals in the video, they remind me of making this song. Dreaming of celestial heights while being stuck in my room. There's also scenes where we are floating around the streets which remind me of making the song too. Ambling around suburbia, having a studio break while everyone else is at work.

This video is telling a surreal story that Martin and I have hidden in there for people to find. But the main idea is that life is circular, we spin around the world every day, the moon around us every month, and the world around the sun every year. Then the cycle repeats, and it's beautiful and scary at the same time."

Merk (real name Mark Perkins) began his career as a touring member of New Zealand bands Tom Lark and Fazerdaze, before releasing his debut album Swordfish in 2017.

Swordfish was recorded from a makeshift studio in a store basement at Roundhead Studios, where Perkins was learning the craft of recording and producing under the stewardship of New Zealand’s greatest musical export Neil Finn. Merk would stay late after work, writing songs and applying his newfound engineering skills to make a record that is full of indie-pop gems. Swordfish went on to win Best Debut Album at the Taite Music Prize (New Zealand’s equivalent of the Mercury or Polaris Prize), and led to tours with Cub Sport, Marlon Williams and Julia Jacklin in Australia and NZ.

Now with new music under his belt, Merk is undertaking his first global release via Humblebrag Records/AWAL, showcasing at SXSW in March and playing his first run of headline shows in NZ and Australia.

CHITRA SHARES NEW SINGLE AND VIDEO 'LEAVING' + ANNOUNCES DEBUT EP RELEASE DATE

February 09, 2020 by Our Golden Friend

Melbourne's Chitra premiered her brand new single, 'Leaving' on Triple J's Home and Hosed with Declan Byrne last week. Declan had some beautiful observations of the song:

"I find it cruisey and beautiful and relaxing but when you listen to those lyrics, they're personal, they're sometimes heavy. Sort of feels breezy and you listen carefully and you're like Ooh shit, it sounds so gorgeous and beautiful but you listen and you sort of peer a bit deeper and there's real emotion on display here"

~ Listen to 'Leaving' here ~

Today she shares an accompanying video for 'Leaving' directed by good friend and creative collaborator Nick McKinlay (Julia Jacklin, Stella Donnelly, Teskey Brothers) along with details for the release of her debut EP.

The song's video features Chitra reflecting on projected moments and memories - a beautiful visual for the feverish feelings the song elicits.

Chitra also announced today that she will be releasing her long awaited, self-titled, debut EP on 28th February 2020. Chitra's EP squeezes the juice out of country, indie-rock and pop and turns it into a zesty new taste of woozy intimacy. Covering deeply complex narratives of unspoken thoughts, self preservation and figuring-it-all-out, Chitra catches the listener off guard. Though things sound breezy, the deeper observations on the EP are astute and rich.

Check out the music video for ‘Leaving’ down below.

ELIZABETH ANNOUNCES MELBOURNE ALBUM LAUNCH AS PART OF BRUNSWICK MUSIC FESTIVAL + SHARES PARTIES (ALICE IVY REMIX)

January 24, 2020 by Our Golden Friend

Today Elizabeth announces her Melbourne album launch show for The Wonderful World of Nature at Estonian House on Monday 16th March, as a part of Brunswick Music Festival.  Support for this show will come from powerhouses Eilish Gilligan, Katie Dey and Chitra.

This launch will join the shows already announced in Sydney and Brisbane, as well as appearances at the Grampians Music Festival and Meadow Music Festival to make up the Australian leg of The Wonderful World of Nature Album Tour.  Tickets for these very special shows are available now, all links below.

Today Elizabeth also shares a glitter-soaked remix of her track parties courtesy of Alice Ivy on Pilerats. You can read more about the collaboration with both artists and how the remix came about here

You can listen to 'parties (Alice Ivy remix)' here

The remix provides the glamour-tragic, cinematic beauty of parties a new veil of smoke and haze for the club environment. Elizabeth's cathartic and bittersweet imagery of crying in the club paired with the vibrant dayglo sounds of Alice Ivy make for a perfect combo – the club as both celebratory and melancholy. Two sides of the emotionally spinning coin. Alice Ivy's remix leaves a bruise where the original parties left a wound.

Of working with Elizabeth on the remix, Alice Ivy said “I still remember the first time I heard Elizabeth singing, it was a Sunday morning at Meredith Music Festival and she completely cured my hangover! I was stoked to be able to flip ‘’parties’’ into a little dance remix.”

The remix's accompanying video was beautifully crafted by Elizabeth's ex-wife Xanthe Dobbie - a Melbourne and Sydney based new media artist and curator. Their practice aims to capture the experience of post-internet contemporaneity and the visuals provide the perfect accompaniment to the glistening remix.

For the first month of release, all proceeds from the download of parties (Alice Ivy remix) via Bandcamp will be split between The Fire Relief Fund for First Nations Communities and Wildlife Victoria.

POPPONGENE SHARES NEW SINGLE 'WET TOWEL'

November 17, 2019 by Our Golden Friend

Today Poppongene shares 'Wet Towel', the third single taken from her upcoming EP. Produced in collaboration with Tim Harvey (Real Feelings, Jade Imagine, Emma Louise), “Wet Towel” is a pop elegy for a relationship, frustrated but ultimately accepting.

Of the song, Poppongene says:
Wet Towel describes the disconnect and parallel release at the end of a relationship. It’s a punchy and sparse song about the multitude of feelings loss brings. At its core, Wet Towel snapshots the frustration of not being able to help someone you love - and the bittersweet realisation that you’re not responsible for anyone other than yourself

Wet Towel will have its radio premiere tonight on Triple R's Out On The Patio. Poppongene graced the Bigsound stages this year, and played a dream supporting set opening for Lucy Dacus. Sophie from the band recently caught up with Nick from Sunbeam Sound Machine over at Trouble Juice!

Originally from Byron Bay, Sophie Treloar is now based in Melbourne, and plays as Poppongene both solo and with a five-piece band, with Skube Burnell, Gemma Helms, Justin Kuchel, and  Deanna Ramsey. Off the back of the success of her first three singles, Poppongene has played significant shows, supporting Lucy Dacus (US), Weyes Blood (US), and Slow Dancer.

RVG ANNOUNCE SUPPORTS FOR AUSTRALIAN HEADLINE TOUR

November 17, 2019 by Our Golden Friend

Melbourne's RVG have announced a string of Australian headline shows this November and December, and today they announce the special guests joining them at each show, including the likes of Rabbit Island, Babey, and Native Cats. Currently on tour through Europe with Tropical Fuck Storm, after playing a packed-out showcase at Reeperbahn in Germany, the band will return to Australia for their first ever national headline tour, playing shows in Melbourne, Sydney, Fremantle, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane and Wollongong.

Having just wrapped up a Europe tour with UK electro-punks Sleaford Mods, RVG released “Alexandra” earlier this year, the first single since their inimitable debut album A Quality of Mercy. Since releasing their first album to critical acclaim and audience adoration, RVG have made huge strides at home and internationally: the band played an iconic set at Meredith Music Festival, travelled Europe and the UK with Shame (UK), toured the US with Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, played shows in Australia with Kurt Vile (US), showcased at South By Southwest and played headline shows in New York and LA, performed at Denmark’s renowned Roskilde festival, and played a BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge session, hosted by Huw Stephens. ‘Alexandra’ was only the first taste of new music from RVG: produced by Victor van Vugt (PJ Harvey, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Beth Orton, The Triffids), and recorded in Melbourne, ‘Alexandra’ signals the next stage in RVG’s thrilling trajectory.

Click here for tickets to RVG's upcoming national headline tour, available now!
