ELIZABETH SHARES DEBUT ALBUM THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF NATURE

Today Elizabeth is proud to share her debut album The Wonderful World of Nature. The album features singles 'Meander', 'Beautiful Baby', and 'Parties', the latter of which The Fader described as a song which "begs to be screamed along to in the Uber home or wept along to during a Monday afternoon comedown".

Stepping into her sound like a silk robe, Elizabeth is the patron saint of sad girls on The Wonderful World of Nature, her debut album, produced by John Castle (Hatchie, Angie McMahon, Cub Sport, Vance Joy). Elizabeth is a glamorous tragic, a queer pop anti-heroine holding a curtain of glittering melodies over ugly truths.

Casting herself as the antagonist wielding pop songs as weapons, she wipes away her running mascara and escapes a destruction of her own making. This debutante divorcée has traded in her white veil for a cocktail and concocted a collection of shimmering heartbreak bangers that celebrate the femme and her indulgent indiscretions. The record is a testament to obsession and the desire to consume as much – of people, of substances, of herself – as she can.

These are pop songs that leave a lasting mark; lovebites that linger. Operating with an absolute absence of ego, together Castle and Elizabeth succumbed to their purest pop whims. 

A fixation on intimacy extends far beyond just the lyrics – in designing the sound of her record, Elizabeth sought to create a feeling of intense closeness with listeners, to give the impression she’s hovering close, dealing out melodic incantations like a trusted friend or conscience on your shoulder. The effect is immediate, drawing the listener fully into their body and reminding them of the weight of heartbreak and desire. In facing the futility of holding onto something that’s already slipped out of her grasp, Elizabeth has created a new kind of heartbreak album.

POPPONGENE SHARES NEW SINGLE 'WET TOWEL'

Today Poppongene shares 'Wet Towel', the third single taken from her upcoming EP. Produced in collaboration with Tim Harvey (Real Feelings, Jade Imagine, Emma Louise), “Wet Towel” is a pop elegy for a relationship, frustrated but ultimately accepting.

Of the song, Poppongene says:
Wet Towel describes the disconnect and parallel release at the end of a relationship. It’s a punchy and sparse song about the multitude of feelings loss brings. At its core, Wet Towel snapshots the frustration of not being able to help someone you love - and the bittersweet realisation that you’re not responsible for anyone other than yourself

Wet Towel will have its radio premiere tonight on Triple R's Out On The Patio. Poppongene graced the Bigsound stages this year, and played a dream supporting set opening for Lucy Dacus. Sophie from the band recently caught up with Nick from Sunbeam Sound Machine over at Trouble Juice!

Originally from Byron Bay, Sophie Treloar is now based in Melbourne, and plays as Poppongene both solo and with a five-piece band, with Skube Burnell, Gemma Helms, Justin Kuchel, and  Deanna Ramsey. Off the back of the success of her first three singles, Poppongene has played significant shows, supporting Lucy Dacus (US), Weyes Blood (US), and Slow Dancer.

ELIZABETH SHARES NEW SINGLE 'MEANDER' + ANNOUNCES MELBOURNE ALBUM RELEASE PARTY AND IN-STORE

Elizabeth has shared 'Meander', the third single from her upcoming debut album The Wonderful World of Nature, which comes out November 1. Watch the video for 'Meander', premiering now at Ad-Hoc. They say: "Though the song seems to be about feeling confined in a relationship, Elizabeth’s powerful delivery feels like an assertion of freedom. She has a knack for stating the brutal bluntly."

On ‘Meander’, Elizabeth charts a confusing course through desire and distraction, one that doesn’t see a clear destination. A pop song awash with lust and lingering feelings, ‘Meander’ is a sweet release of unadulterated emotions.

Of the song Elizabeth says:

“This song is honestly about a distraction fling, taking a lover outside of your primary relationship and hoping it will solve all of your problems. The last lyrics of the song (“a band of gold what a thing to hold me back/a band of ash what a thing to crash this party”) were written in a tiny piano room in the middle of Sydney CBD, sobbed out through gallons of frustration tears."

GOOD MORNING SHARE NEW ALBUM BASKETBALL BREAKUPS + VIDEO FOR 'CLASSIC QUIP'

Today Good Morning - the Melbourne-based recording project of Stefan Blair and Liam Parsons - share their third album Basketball Breakups, alongside the video for 'Classic Quip'. Following previous standalone singles “Boy, I’m Just A Loser For Your Love” and “Take It Easy For Me, Stranger,” Basketball Breakups distils Good Morning into just over twenty minutes of scrappy, melodic, melancholy guitar music.

Basketball Breakups was recorded over four humid summer days in a studio in Japan, self-produced and mixed, and mastered by Liam “Snowy” Halliwell. Blair and Parsons, who are joined by bandmates James Macleod and John Considine, sound truly at ease on these songs, which are mostly comprised of early takes. Named after the blissful “breakup dinner” at the end of a junior sports season, the spirit of that communal joy is alive on this album. While their previous album, The Option, was tightly rehearsed and made with the vision of a true rock record in mind, Basketball Breakups was recorded while it was arranged, on digital and tape. 

There’s a sense of on-the-fly intimacy on this album. These songs are privy to anxiety and anticipation, the good and the bad kinds of extended reflection, and what the band term their first “requited” love songs. Ultimately, Basketball Breakups shows Good Morning at their most candid and their most understated - dealing in the poetics of everyday life with levity, grace, and grit. 

CHITRA SHARES NEW SINGLE 'A KIND'

Today Melbourne's Chitra shares her second single, 'A Kind'. A taciturn takedown of a would-be love interest, Chitra delivers this song with one eyebrow raised. With rousing drums and twangy guitar, this is Chitra at her catchiest yet. A Kind was premiered on triple j's 'Home & Hosed' with Declan Byrne last night.

Of the song, Chitra says:

'A Kind' is a song of frustration whilst being a little bit sarcastic about it. To me, it’s a song about standing up for yourself and realizing your self worth, it’s almost cathartic to be putting it out.

Drawing on elements of rock’n’roll, contemporary indie-rock, classic singer-songwriter, and a hint of blues and country twang, Chitra’s music provides a rich platform for storytelling, an element of songwriting she is particularly passionate about.

At the age of only twenty-two, Chitra’s short career has already shown immense promise: Debut single “Better Than Before” has received airplay on Triple J, and was added to rotation on Triple J’s Unearthed radio. Declan Byrne, host of Triple J’s Home and Hosed, referred to Chitra as a “powerhouse”, writing: “I first heard Chitra's voice live and it was so stunning. Plus she's such a great storyteller.” Nkechi Anele, lead singer of Saskwatch and host of Triple J’s Roots n All described Chitra as “a worldly old soul”, noting of “Better Than Before” that “there's not light in the darkness but there is definitely beauty and wonder.” Off the back of her success on the Unearthed platform, Triple J awarded Chitra with the chance to play at The Drop festival in Torquay, alongside Angus and Julia Stone and Hockey Dad. Favourably comparing Chitra to her songwriting role models Angel Olsen and Julia Jacklin, Beat Magazine praised Chitra’s storytelling, writing that “Better Than Before” has “a calming quality despite the emotional complexity at its core.”

Today Melbourne's 808s & Greatest Hits shares 'The Fear Remains', the brand new single from his upcoming album Cabin Vibes, out October 7. A meandering wander through lowkey paranoia, 'The Fear Remains' is a perfect taste of 808s' specific brand of psychedelia. The song and its video are premiering now over at Happy Mag.

808s & Greatest Hits is the recording project of Skube Burnell, perhaps best described as psychedelic alt-pop influenced in part by bands like Broadcast, Television, Lô Borges, David Axelrod, Todd Rungren, Dungen and film scores like Alain Goraguer’s Fantastic Planet. Burnell is a fan of unconventional music and has a soft spot for long prog jams, so you can expect to find a verse and chorus somewhere in there and of course many weird detours off the beaten path. Live, the band is filled out as a 5-piece consisting of Burnell, Maddie Felton, Jeff Bartels, Lochy Funston and Cameron Frew.

The album Cabin Vibes was recorded in various recording studios and houses over the course of a year. It was finished in a rented cabin over the course of a week - with the addition of the meta title track being written about finishing off the album. Most of the instruments were performed by Burnell or by the live band during studio sessions. Guests on the album include Maria Moles (Jaala) drumming on some of the songs and Snowy (The Ocean Party, No Local) lending his Saxophone playing to ‘The Fear Remains’. ‘Lord Knows Best’ is a cover of Dirty Beaches with Burnell putting his own spin on it and Maddie Felton singing the vocals. It was mixed, 50/50 by John Lee (Phaedra Studios) and James Cecil (Super Melody World), four songs each. Mastered by Joe Carra at Crystal Mastering.

RVG ANNOUNCE AUSTRALIAN HEADLINE TOUR

Melbourne's RVG announce a string of Australian headline shows this November and December. After playing a packed-out showcase at Reeperbahn in Germany, the band will return to Australia for their first ever national headline tour, playing shows in Melbourne, Sydney, Fremantle, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane and Wollongong.

Having just wrapped up a Europe tour with UK electro-punks Sleaford Mods, RVG released “Alexandra” earlier this year, the first single since their inimitable debut album A Quality of Mercy. Since releasing their first album to critical acclaim and audience adoration, RVG have made huge strides at home and internationally: the band played an iconic set at Meredith Music Festival, travelled Europe and the UK with Shame (UK), toured the US with Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, played shows in Australia with Kurt Vile (US), showcased at South By Southwest and played headline shows in New York and LA, performed at Denmark’s renowned Roskilde festival, and played a BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge session, hosted by Huw Stephens. ‘Alexandra’ was only the first taste of new music from RVG: produced by Victor van Vugt (PJ Harvey, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Beth Orton, The Triffids), and recorded in Melbourne, ‘Alexandra’ signals the next stage in RVG’s thrilling trajectory.

A dramatic ode to love lost, 'Beautiful Baby' shows the more tender side of heartache, after debut single 'Parties' introduced its destructive, excessive counterpart. The video for 'Beautiful Baby', directed by Triana Hernandez, is a queer love story and an homage to the drama of onscreen romance. Of the song and its video, Elizabeth says:

"'beautiful baby' is about leaving the chaos of a relationship behind. it's about trying to understand how a love that was so beautiful could be a thing that ends. we took a lot of inspiration from the music of twin peaks for this song, hoping to re-imagine the magical spell of angelo badalamenti and julee cruise."

Director Triana Hernandez says:
"The 'Beautiful Baby' music video is an exploration of Elizabeth's power and allure. It's a break up song that works like a spell and speaks of pain as much as it speaks of moving on. The song is emotionally intense so for this clip we worked with two of the most visually dramatic inspirations out there: Lana Del Rey and David Lynch's Twin Peaks series."

Today Poppongene shares 'Eternally Alone', the second single taken from her upcoming EP. Produced in collaboration with Tim Harvey (Real Feelings, Jade Imagine, Emma Louise), “Eternally Alone” is an upbeat ode to dating-complacence, dreaming of an effortless connection, all the while reasoning that alone isn't so bad.

It's a humorous pop song about wanting warm connection without warped compromise. It’s me daydreaming about a lovely shimmering romance that I don’t have time for. Less morbid than the title suggests, much more about poking fun at my priorities.
