GEORGIA MAQ AND ALICE IVY TEAM UP ON NEW SINGLE 'SOMEONE STRANGER'

July 29, 2021 by Our Golden Friend

Naarm / Melbourne’s Georgia Maq and Alice Ivy today share their collaborative single, 'Someone Stranger', a natural coming together for two of Australia’s most prominent and tireless advocates for non-male representation in the conventionally male dominated spaces of punk and electronic music, respectively. The track was premiered yesterday afternoon on triple j Drive.

~ Listen to 'Someone Stranger' HERE ~

Since debuting with 2019’s Pleaser LP, Georgia Maq has chased a more genuine form of pop music in her solo career, a vision in the vein of that pioneered by the likes of Robyn, Charli XCX, Carly Rae Jepsen and others, that retains all of the glamour and universality but feels unburdened from capitalist underpinnings. Full of DIY electro-pop that mined evergreen themes of romantic, sexual and self-love, Maq’s solo debut was not so much a transformation as it was a revelation, opening up on her vulnerabilities and heartbreaks, finding strength in this self-exposure and revealing the multitudes to herself beyond the Camp Cope project.

If Pleaser was a left-of-field toe dip, 'Someone Stranger' is a full, unencumbered immersion: the chrysalis. Linking with Alice Ivy, 'Someone Stranger' continues the revelation of Georgia Maq, musing on loneliness, desire, the need for connection and the therapeutic potential of dancefloors, whilst proving once again her penchant for a surprise that rewards. Of the single, Maq shares: "Annika and I knew we wanted to make a song together so we made the time and in about three hours we had pretty much finished 'Someone Stranger'. I write lyrics really quickly when I feel I have to and Annika creates amazing melodies so it just worked really well together. The song is very much open to interpretation, but personally it’s about purging romance through movement."

For producer and songwriter Alice Ivy, 'Someone Stranger' builds on the refined curatorial efforts of her recently released second LP, the Australian Music Prize-shortlisted Don’t Sleep, while tapping into the emotionally-charged elation of singles such as 'Don’t Sleep (feat. imbi & BOI)' and 'In My Mind (feat. Ecca Vandal)'. Boasting collaborations with Odette, Montaigne, Ngaiire, Thelma Plum, Bertie Blackman and more, Don’t Sleep demonstrated Ivy’s adroit ability as a producer, collaborator and tastemaker in not only platforming new voices and artists but also uncovering new dimensions to artists thought to be well established entities, working to diversify the sound and look of the traditionally male-dominated studio space in the process. Ivy’s modus operandi of collaborating with a deliberating broad range of artists now leads her to working with Georgia Maq on 'Someone Stranger', another thread in an abundant tapestry of underrepresented voices and stories that runs across her entire discography.

Alice Ivy says of the single: "I feel like Georgia and I have always been destined to write together, so I was super excited when we finally got the chance last year. I played her a little demo I had kicking around and she immediately started writing lyrics for it. I loved how fast-paced the whole experience was! I think we were both thinking, "Let's make this a song we'd wanna hear in a club!". Georgia's voice is so incredible, it was cool just being able to just write a massive pop banga with her. Very excited to have this one out in the world!"

Ivy's production lends a big-room sheen and sense of scale to Maq's songwriting, with resounding four on the floor drums, sweeping chords, strummed acoustic guitar in the background and immense synth lines that rise from the bottom of the mix, reaching ever and ever higher towards a ceiling that, seemingly, doesn’t exist. "Touch my body, I feel something," Maq soars as the chorus, barely able to contain itself for much longer, bursts forth from the restrained verses, her vocals sounding smoother, sleeker and more sure of themselves than ever, pushing further into rapturous euphoria. Later this year, Georgia Maq will be performing live at the Sydney Opera House as part of the city's annual VIVID LIVE festival - stay tuned for the announcement of new show dates coming soon.

July 22, 2021 by Our Golden Friend

Today sees Elizabeth and Alice Skye announce the third round of rescheduled dates for their much anticipated co-headline East Coast Tour. While the tour was originally slated to conclude early this month these new dates see the duo making their way along the coast until November. Coinciding with the spring blooms the bands will be bringing an abundance of sweet music to drive away the winter blues, stirring up the biggest, best and most cathartic feelings amongst the crowd.

Namely Elizabeth’s deluxe edition of The Wonderful World of Nature released after her signing to US based label AntiFragile, and the four searing singles Alice released ahead of her sophomore album I Feel Better But I Don’t Feel Good out this Friday July 23.

The return of live music early this year saw Alice play a headline show at The Corner, support Avalanches at Sidney Myer Music Bowl and go on tour with Midnight Oil as a part of the Makarrata Project. Elizabeth played Brunswick Music Festival and spent the first half of the year playing Meadow Festival, Inward Goods Festival and STBS.

With the first national headline tour for both of them finally going ahead, the duo will be sharing the stage across several dates including shows in Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Castlemaine and Ballarat. Full tour dates and ticket information can be found below.

ALICE SKYE + ELIZABETH NEW RESCHEDULED AUSTRALIAN EAST COAST CO-HEADLINE TOUR DATES

July 05, 2021 by Our Golden Friend

In true 2021 fashion today Alice Skye and Elizabeth announce another round of rescheduled tour dates for their Australian East-Coast Co-Headline Tour. It's not a real tour without a few bumps in the road, even if the car hasn't started yet, but the wait is sure to make these shows all the sweeter. The world may seem like it's conspiring against them but nothing can stop Elizabeth and Alice, along with their bands, from traversing the country, embracing the stage and stirring up the biggest, best and most cathartic feelings amongst the crowd.

While their 2020 plans to tour were put on hold, including an album launch tour for Elizabeth, and a slot at SXSW for Alice, the pair did not sit idly by. Last year was a big one for both Elizabeth and Alice, the former releasing a deluxe edition of her debut album The Wonderful World of Nature, and the latter four searing singles from her own soon to be released sophomore album I Feel Better But I Don't Feel Good.

The return of live music saw Alice play a headline show at The Corner, support Avalanches at Myer Music Bowl and go on tour with Midnight Oil as a part of the Makarrata Project. Elizabeth has played Brunswick Music Festival and has spent the first half of the year playing Meadow Festival, Inward Goods Festival and STBS. With some forced time away from the stage the pair have never been more ready to join forces and head out on the road together.

With the first national headline tour for both of them finally going ahead, the duo will be sharing the stage across several dates including shows in Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane, Maroochydore, Melbourne, Castlemaine and Ballarat. Full tour dates and ticket information can be found below.

RVG ANNOUNCE AUSTRALIAN HEADLINE TOUR CELEBRATING THE RELEASE OF SECOND ALBUM 'FERAL'

June 24, 2021 by Our Golden Friend

Today RVG announce their long awaited Feral Australian Album Tour. Now over a year since it's release, and with plenty of time for the band and fans alike to ruminate on it's themes in isolation RVG are bringing the album to life across Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Fremantle and Castlemaine.

Starting the tour with a bang RVG are playing at the Sydney Opera House as part of Vivid Live before heading around the country throughout August and September.

This marks the first interstate shows since the release of second album Feral last year. Recorded at Head Gap studios with producer Victor Van Vugt (PJ Harvey, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Beth Orton), Feral was RVG’s first full-length release in three years, coming just as the world went into hibernation.

To Romy Vager, RVG’s lead singer and lyricist, to feel feral is to feel outside of everything. Throughout the album that feeling of isolation is incited, but it never feels hopeless: these songs channel the raw energy of despair and frustration into melodies that often feel victorious, perhaps only because they so aptly supply a soundtrack to the end of days.

Following a recent collaboration with Julia Jacklin covering Björk's 'Army of Me' and a handful of Melbourne based shows earlier this year, including a slot at Boogie Festival, RVG are set for their return to shows across the border. Tickets are on sale now.

RVG live is Romy Vager, Reuben Bloxham, Marc Nolte and Isabele Wallace.

Nothing can stop the dreamiest tour of the year going ahead. Today Alice Skye and Elizabeth announce rescheduled tour dates for their Australian East-Coast Co-Headline Tour. While their Victorian dates stay the same the rest of the tour moves to late July. After a year of solitude and isolation, and now a few weeks more, Elizabeth and Alice, along with their bands, are set to traverse the country, embrace the stage and stir up the biggest, best and most cathartic feelings amongst the crowd.

Stepping into her sound like a silk robe, Elizabeth is the patron saint of sad girls. With her latest release The Wonderful World of Nature Deluxe Edition, she stakes her claim as a glamorous tragic, a queer pop anti-heroine holding a curtain of glittering melodies over ugly truths. Casting herself as the antagonist wielding pop songs as weapons, she wipes away her running mascara and escapes a destruction of her own making.

Alice Skye is a Wergaia/Wemba Wemba person living and writing music in Naarm (Melbourne, Australia). Since her first album, the  critically acclaimed 'Friends with Feelings' she has signed with Bad Apples, the Indigenous-driven label that celebrates and prioritises' blak excellence. Alice's upcoming sophomore album 'I Feel Better but I Don't Feel Good' to be released on July 23 was produced by local artist Jen Cloher. The latest single from the album, Party Tricks, was released on 7th May. Her work continues to look inwards and explores finding staunchness in softness.

RVG & JULIA JACKLIN JOIN FORCES TO COVER BJORK'S 'ARMY OF ME' AS A PART OF RISING SINGLES CLUB + RVG PLAYING THE SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE FOR VIVID LIVE

May 27, 2021 by Our Golden Friend

Today RVG and Julia Jacklin share their version of Bjork's 'Army of Me' as part of Rising Singles Club monthly full-moon releases. Teaming up to take on the inimitable Bjork the group spent a day in the studio working together and perfecting their 90s Icelandic rock sensibilities.

With Julia and Romy Vager taking on shared vocal responsibilities the track is a powerful rework, combining the intensity and frenetic energy of the classic with Julia and RVG's own distinctive sound, a wild ride, and a true love letter to Bjork.

~Stream/Download the song HERE~

Speaking of the inspiration for the track Julia said "I just love Bjork and I love RVG. I was running on a treadmill which I don't do very often, and I was listening to 'Army of Me' over and over again to make me feel stronger than I am. Then I thought why not try and cover this song with another artist that makes me feel stronger than I am and I did! Was a good musical punch in the face to wake me up from a year of living a very small quiet life. RVG are one of my favourite bands in the whole world and it was just a real blessing to spend some time with them making music."

Likewise RVG added "We adore Julia's music and were thrilled when she asked us to do a precious Bjork song with her. I think we all wanted to challenge ourselves to be as intuitive as possible."

The track premiered last night on Triple R's Breaking and Entering with Julia and Romy joining Simon to chat through the creative process. You can listen back to the interview HERE.

In even more good news RVG are joining the Vivid LIVE 2021 lineup. Playing their first interstate show since 2019 the band will be taking command of the Sydney Opera House stage in August, a much welcome return to non-Victorian shores.

Tickets for Vivid LIVE are on sale now, you can get yours HERE.

This also marks their first Sydney show since the release of second album Feral last year. Recorded at Head Gap studios with producer Victor Van Vugt (PJ Harvey, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Beth Orton), Feral was RVG’s first full-length release in three years, coming just as the world went into hibernation.

GEORGIA MAQ SIGNS TO OUR GOLDEN FRIEND FOR MANAGEMENT & SELECT MUSIC FOR AU/NZ BOOKINGS + PLAYING VIVID 2021

May 24, 2021 by Our Golden Friend

Today we are thrilled to announce that Georgia Maq has joined the Our Golden Friend Management roster. Georgia now joins existing management acts Chitra, Elizabeth, Good Morning and RVG as Our Golden Friend celebrates its 5th year.

Of the most recent signing Our Golden Friend's owner / director Lorrae McKenna says “Georgia is such an incredible talent and I’ve been a huge fan of her work with Camp Cope for many years. I’m super excited to welcome her to the Our Golden Friend management family and can’t wait to share her new solo music with the world.”

In even more exciting news Georgia will be taking the stage for her first ever full production live show at VIVID LIVE 2021. Making her solo stage debut, Georgia will be pulling out all the stops when she plays the Sydney Opera House on Saturday 14th August. Tickets go on sale this Friday 28th May at midday, keep an eye out HERE.

Rounding out the day's announcement's Georgia has also signed to Select Music, where she will be working with Casey O'Shaughnessy for all Australian and New Zealand bookings. Speaking about the newest edition to her booking roster Casey said “I have been a fan of Georgia’s songwriting and powerful voice for over 6 years now, and am so incredibly proud and excited to welcome her into the Select Music family. I look forward to watching her take over the world.”

Following the release of her debut solo album Pleaser at the end of 2019 (Run For Cover/Poison City Records) Georgia dipped her toe into the world of pop music a distinct departure from her original punk music roots. Her first ever live performance at VIVID LIVE 2021 will see her forging forward in her new musical direction and emerging from the waves a glistening pop star. Upon it's surprise release Pleaser garnered rave reviews both in Australian and Internationally, was named triple j Feature Album, was Georgia Maq's first full length solo release, and allowed her the space to experiment with a new sonic palette, expressing her love of pop music, but never letting go of the acute intimacy and no-holds-barred emotion that has always characterised her lyrics.

Our Golden Friend are so excited to welcome Georgia Maq to the family and can't wait to share what's coming next!

VL21-GeorgiaMaq-StdRollout-1080x1920-IGS.jpg

Georgia Maq has established herself in recent years as the singer and guitarist of Melbourne indie rock band Camp Cope, whose sophomore album How to Socialise and Make Friends (Run For Cover/Poison City Records) won widespread acclaim, included on a slew of 2018 end of year lists including NPR, Pitchfork, Billboard, Bandcamp, Stereogum, The Guardian, and Brooklyn Vegan.

The impact of the trio's music on the indie landscape has been undeniable, with Georgia emerging as a brave, resilient, and often politicized figure. Using her formidable voice to fight for the betterment of the music industry and rally against sexism, racism and all forms of structural inequality, she has never shied away from the uncomfortable and difficult topics that dominate the news cycle.

So when Georgia describes her debut solo album, Pleaser (Run For Cover/Poison City Records) as "a love album", it's immediately clear that this is a step in a different artistic direction. "I think the main theme is love, obviously, all kinds of love. Love that you walked away from so you could love yourself, unrequited love, forgiving love, love with no point to it," she explains.

Pleaser's 8 tracks shimmer and pulsate, calling to mind pop artists like Lorde, Robyn, Charli XCX and Gwen Stefani. "I took more time to record the songs and play around with them, and I liked that because I could change things and experiment more," Georgia says, continuing "I think the pressure of working with other people drove me to finish the songs, which I hated but also loved because it's nice to be challenged."

While Georgia may have felt challenged while writing Pleaser, the experience of listening to the album is anything but difficult. Its unapologetic pop sentiments shine and delight, Georgia's gorgeous alto soaring above each track. It's a record listeners will find themselves quickly falling in love with and returning to again and again - and really, in times like these, who doesn't need more love songs?

GOOD MORNING RETURN WITH TWO-TRACK ‘MOLLYDUKER / KEEP IT’ + ANNOUNCE VICTORIAN TOUR THIS JUNE + SIGN TO POLYVINYL RECORDS

April 28, 2021 by Our Golden Friend

Australian duo Good Morning return today with their first new music in two years the double release ‘Mollyduker / Keep It’ and announce their Victorian tour dates this June.

~ Listen to 'Mollyduker / Keep It' HERE ~

The pastoral, rangy ‘Mollyduker’, sung by Stefan, is a quintessential driving song, its steady, wiry groove hardly letting up over the course of its runtime. The song’s ease belies its tense imagery: drunken spews, held tongues, and anxiety tokens abound. Stefan says: "‘Mollyduker’ was something my Pa called me whenever we’d be hanging out and working on his farm. It’s a reference to me being left-handed, however, I used to take it as somewhat of a dig. The lyrics are a reflection on my relationship with him, as well as the farm itself, which has served as a home to a lot of my family over the years.”

‘Keep It’, sung by Liam, is no less inviting and no less heavy with psychic weight. A meditation on failure, drinking, and aging, 'Keep It' is laden with piano and warm, warping guitar — soft-edged counterweights to the severed heads and flooding waters of the song’s lyrics. “Keep It is an ode to stasis,” Liam says. “Repressed feelings, substance misadventure and arrested development in your late 20s.”

Good Morning’s past run of two-track singles — 2019’s Take It Easy For Me, Stranger/Boy, I’m Just A Loser For Your Love; 2016’s Step Aside/Oppsie, and 2015’sOn The Street/You and A Vessel/Radiovoice — are among the band’s most beloved songs, and ‘Mollyduker / Keep It’ are sure to join their ranks. Rich and warmly-hued, these songs reflect the Good Morning of 2021: a little more thoughtful, a little more virtuosic, and in no way any less anxious. These songs, written collaboratively, speak to the conditions under which they were made - first written in the two-week quarantine period after the band came home from their COVID-cancelled American tour, and finished as the first products of the new studio.

The news comes with the announcement of the pairs signing to Polyvinyl Records (USA/ROW) joining their eclectic roster including the likes of Alvvays, Kero Kero Bonito, STRFKR, Julia Jacklin, and more. The two-track will also be coming out on the band’s own imprint, Good Morning Music Company Worldwide via Virgin Music Australia. Of the signing, Polyvinyl Label Director, Seth Hubbard shares, "I’ve been a fan of the band for years, but when I heard their newest collection of songs I was blown away. We are so excited for Polyvinyl to help share this music with the world." The band reflect, "We’re excited to start working with Polyvinyl, a label we’ve admired for a while now. Here’s to a long and beautiful journey together!"

They say it’s hard to keep a creative partnership going after a while. Not so in the case of Good Morning - in their seventh year of making music together, the Melbourne duo made up of Stefan Blair and Liam Parsons have only just now stepped into that most fruitful of creative endeavours: commercial real estate. They’re not landlords just yet: in fact, the early months of 2021 have seen Stefan and Liam sign the lease on a modest, appropriately scrappy recording studio in Melbourne’s inner north. The natural next step for two musicians who have always preferred to do things entirely themselves - the band first formed after Stefan and Liam split the cost of a Foxtex 4-track tape machine - Good Morning’s new recording space is already yielding dividends: today, they release 'Mollyduker/Keep It', a new double-A-side single and their first new music since 2019’s Basketball Breakups. A full-length for Polyvinyl will be released later in 2021, with details to come.

'Mollyduker/Keep It' is out now via Polyvinyl Records/Virgin Music Australia, buy/stream it here.

CHITRA DEBUT VINYL EP IN STORES NOW + ANNOUNCES FREE IN-STORE @ ROCKSTEADY RECORDS

April 26, 2021 by Our Golden Friend

Today Melbourne songwriting dreamboat CHITRA releases her debut self-titled EP on Limited Edition Translucent Red Vinyl. The EP was originally released digitally right at the dawn of the pandemic, which means we've all had plenty of time to get acquainted with the EP and realise that nothing could beat hearing it played straight from the turntable.

The record features previously released singles 'Leaving', 'Keep Up', 'Better Than Before' and 'A Kind', the latter inspiring Pilerats to describe Chitra as "a buzzing master of emotive storytelling and the empowerment that comes with it; her subtle combination of sounds rooted in thick emotion and a sense of uplifting."

~Buy the Vinyl here~

Following her two sold out launch shows at The Retreat Hotel last night Chitra is excited to announce a free, all-ages show at Rocksteady Records on Friday May 7. To celebrate the vinyl being available to purchase in-stores Chitra and her band will be playing in one of our favourite record stores from 6pm. Capacity is limited so show up early to secure your spot.

Chitra@Rocksteady.png

Chitra’s songs capture the candid and lived in space of in-betweenness of an old soul growing up and navigating the present with an observant and cuttingly self aware lens. Each song offers a vulnerable new insight, individually and collectively weaving a complex narrative. Her love of 50s & 60s girl groups like The Supremes and The Shirelles shines through on the production and vocal performance as well as influences from modern day heroes such as Molly Burch, Angel Olsen and Adrianne Lenker of Big Thief.

Growing up surrounded by the diverse musical influences on the Bellarine Peninsula, Chitra’s sound is unrefined by formal training and blossoms with the self assuredness and freedom of a coastal kid.

Chitra recorded this debut Self-Titled EP with new collaborators Dylan Young (Way Dynamic, Emma Russack, Snowy Band) on guitar & piano, Lehman B Smith (Totally Mild, Grand Salvo) on bass and Maria Moles (Jaala, Mild Life, Doroth) on drums. With the band and production team emerging from different backgrounds, each bringing their own musical language to the table. Chitra braved the highly vulnerable process to capture each specific feeling in its entirety through collaboration, trial & error and embarking on unexpected avenues of discovery for a formerly solo artist.

Chitra’s effortlessly cool energy and endearing magnetism emerges from her definiteness to remain wholly herself in her writing and music, making work that is deeply grounded in the honesty of her day to day. She represents a strong and free thinking creative emerging within Australian culture that strives for creative authenticity rather than conventional milestones of the past.
