MERK Shares new single & video 'Deep Dive' & Announces New Zealand Album Tour

March 25, 2021 by Our Golden Friend

Today Merk announces the latest single ‘Deep Dive' from forthcoming album Infinite Youth out April 9th.

Merk is the solo project of New Zealand songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Mark Perkins, which began when Perkins recorded 2016’s Swordfish (winner of Best Debut at the Taite Music Prize). Releasing both ‘GOD’ and ‘Laps Around the Sun’ earlier this year ‘Deep Dive’ is another look into the playful yet sincere world of Merk.

“Focusing on his own pop-edged indie brew, recent singles ‘H.N.Y.B’ and ‘GOD’ alerted fans to his solitary prowess, with those off piste lyrical observations setting him out from the pack.” - Clash (Track of the Day)

‘Deep Dive’ sees Merk setting the scene with a disco tinged beat, driving the song along as the delicate play of Juno Synth and guitar lay the groundwork for his own kind of syrupy sweet pop. A master at creating tracks that feel minimal and sparse imbibed with hidden gems, giving head spinning depth that you’ll catch on repeat listens. Merk weaves in everything from the play of strings to voice memos of the St Paul’s Cathedral organist.

Speaking on the new single, Merk had this to say:

“A portion of this song came to me in a dream one night, I woke up and went to the piano and recorded the demo. For that reason it feels very surreal and seperate to me. It’s one of the more pop moments on the album, a song that carries you the whole way through without changing too much. It reminds me a lot of our 80s Japanese city pop references as well as a New York New-Wave sound.

We started this in Copenhagen by chopping up a breakbeat sample to give this heavy groove and messed around with  the guitar and Juno synth until they had this nice minimalist interplay with each other, almost becoming one instrument. When we recorded drums with Alex, we played him the song and told him to do whatever he felt. He laid  down this really nice disco groove over the breakbeat that gave the song a lot of energy. To add a sense of depth I buried in the mix a voice memo recording I made while on tour in London when visiting St  Paul’s Cathedral of an organist playing while tourists walked around. My favourite part of this song is the beautiful cello of Danish musician Nicole Hogstrand. In particular her pizzicato doubling the guitar lead in the instrumental.”

Accompanying Deep Dive’s release is a Sports Team written and directed video featuring Merkas head pancake chef at Auckland’s sweetest rooftop party.

Of the video Merk says:

“Sometimes I DJ at weddings under the name DJ Ragù and wear a chefs hat to help bring a good vibe. I think I made an offhand reference to this weird character I perform under to Sports Team when we were hanging out once, which they must’ve remembered because when I asked them to make a video with me for Deep Dive this is the concept they came back with: A rooftop pancake party where I’m performing like a DJ but instead of flipping records I’m flipping cakes, baby. So we invited a bunch of people over to my house in Auckland, went up to the rooftop and chaos ensued!”

MERK Shares new single & video 'Laps Around The Sun' & Announces new album 'Infinite Youth' out 9th April 2021

March 25, 2021 by Our Golden Friend

Today we are excited to announce the second single 'Laps Around The Sun' from  Merk's forthcoming album 'Infinite Youth' which will be released on April 9th. The track and video were premiered on Clash Magazine overnight HERE

"Laps Around The Sun' is a deft, sincere piece of songwriting, with Merk's heart-on-sleeve approach resulting in an incredibly endearing track."

After releasing the first single 'GOD' earlier this year, Merk continues to satiate Australian audiences with the release the new single and self produced video for 'Laps Around The Sun'.

Merk is the solo project of New Zealand songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Mark Perkins, which began when Perkins recorded 2016’s Swordfish (winner of Best Debut at the Taite Music Prize).

Listen to 'Laps Around The Sun' HERE

Speaking on the new single, Merk had this to say:

"This song is about finding poetry in the mundane, repetitiveness of life. It was written on my birthday, which is also Valentine's Day. I was struggling with the existential dread that can come on your birthday, you know, that lovely internal dialogue that goes “everything is meaningless and so am I” sorta thing. This is a reflection on the idea that, sure, maybe everything is equally meaningless but doesn’t that also mean everything is just as meaningful as the next thing? Which is kinda cool. A jellybean or Jupiter matter just the same. Whether you are waiting for the weekend or celebrating another lap around the sun, or falling in and out of love or doing the dishes there’s beauty to be found in the never-ending repetitions and rhythms of life."

The video for 'Laps Around The Sun' was self-directed & edited by Merk and collaborators Abbey Egdenand Martin Sagadin.

Of the video Merk says:

"By sheer coincidence we ended up filming the video on my birthday too, so it was natural for it to become about that. We made it very guerilla style with a small crew of friends, it felt super wholesome and very meta."

On his new album Infinite Youth, Merk examines the blurry line between adolescence and adulthood, and all the clarity and mess that accompanies that blurring. This is a record that thrives on a certain simplicity of rhythm, melody, and lyric, and is compelled by contrast: pop songs influenced by art music, an album about adulthood that reflects heavily on what it is to be young, and a sonic world that is both expansive and deeply intimate.

While first album Swordfish introduced many of the qualities that Merk continues to cultivate, it’s on Infinite Youth that he comes fully into his own. “In the past it felt like I was hiding, but now I’m trying to wear my heart on my sleeve a little more,” Perkins muses.

He has an understated, commanding presence, a playful intensity, as well as an ability to simply let go. Lyrically, this album treads a line between earnest, vulnerable, and knowingly tongue in cheek: songs that began in irony mutated into sincerity, and vice versa.

You can catch Merk playing straight to your screens for SXSW Online Music Festival this March.

'Laps Around The Sun' is Merk’s second single from album 'Infinite Youth' out worldwide via Humblebrag Records April 9th 2021. Pre order the album HERE.

MERK SHARES NEW SINGLE & VIDEO 'GOD' & DEBUTS 'DAY IN THE LIFE' FEATURE ON SPIN

February 10, 2021 by Our Golden Friend

In exciting news, we are thrilled to once again be working with Humblebrag Records to promote the new single 'God' from the imitable New Zealand artist and producer Merk.

Merk is the musical moniker of Auckland, New Zealand artist, multi-instrumentalist and producer Mark Perkins who began his career as a touring member of Tom Lark and Fazerdaze before releasing his debut album Swordfish in 2017.

He earned acclaim with his 2020 single “H.N.Y.B” and today he unveils the utopic new “GOD” single/video that was premiered last night on Triple R's 'Out On The Patio' with Holly Periera. 'GOD' is strapped with a disco-indebted synth line, skittering percussion, bouncing bass and repetitive mantra-esque lyrics that promise much more to come from this creative mastermind.

~ Listen to 'GOD' here ~

unnamed.jpg

Speaking on the creation of the single, Merk had this to say:

“Songwriting has a sneaky way of revealing to me my feelings long before I am aware of them,” shares Merk. “‘GOD’ is an example of a song that did just that. When writing ‘GOD’ I thought I was in full irony mode, I was trying to make a cool song out of potentially the least cool thing one could sing about. It’s kinda weird, but in my head I had this image of an anthropological A.I. or something looking at the whole history of mankind and wondering what “God” was. It wasn’t until well into the songwriting process I realised that as tongue in cheek as I was being, I was also being entirely earnest. At the time I was doing a big deconstruction of my childhood growing up around religion and trying to figure out what it was I myself believe. It also coincided with a particularly low point in my life, and the sweet resignation that comes with the feeling that things couldn’t get any worse; a peaceful feeling that at least nothing can hurt you when you’re at the bottom!”

To celebrate the release of this absolute woozy banger, Merk also shares a 'Day In The Life' feature on SPIN Magazine HERE. Check in on Merk's day to day in this unreal insight into Merk's creative world.

Watch the video for ‘GOD’ HERE

Watch the video for ‘GOD’ HERE

The video for 'GOD' was self-directed & edited alongside Martin Sagadin who has previously directed videos for Aldous Harding & Marlon Williams.

On the conception of the video, Merk explains:

“During one of the lockdowns I became a bit obsessed with video glitch art. There is a super cool online community of people who take old 80s video equipment and circuit bend them into these weird video FX units. After talking with a few of them and getting their advice I found an old CRT TV and some video synths and decided to recreate the GOD video by destroying our super high quality footage and filming the TV as it ran through this old outdated gear.”

Merk learned the craft of recording and producing under the stewardship of Crowded House’s (and now Fleetwood Mac’s!) Neil Finn while working at Roundhead Studios. His debut album Swordfish went on to win Best Debut Album at the Taite Music Prize (New Zealand’s equivalent of the Mercury or Polaris Prize), and led to tours with Cub Sport, Marlon Williams and Julia Jacklin in Australia and New Zealand.

'GOD' is Merk’s second global release via Humblebrag Records.

Stay tuned for news on a new album in 2021.

808s & GREATEST HITS SHARES SOPHOMORE ALBUM GREATEST HITS II

December 11, 2020 by Our Golden Friend

Today 808s & Greatest Hits share their much anticipated second album Greatest Hits II. The musical project of Skube Burnell and his many collaborators, 808s & Greatest Hits continue to spin the wheels of experimentation in the follow up to their debut album Cabin Vibes which was released in late 2019. Greatest Hits II is out today Friday 11th of December 2020 on limited edition cassette and digital services via Our Golden Friend.

LISTEN TO GREATEST HITS II HERE

Burnell begun working on the new album in late 2019 whilst recording and mixing previous release Cabin Vibes. The album started as an eclectic suite of 16 songs written by Skube that were eventually honed and whittled down to a tidy selection of 8 - crafted, mutated and reworked to evolve into its final form - Greatest Hits II. As opposed to the solo recording process of Cabin Vibes, 808s & Greatest Hits enlisted the help of producer, engineer and all round good guy / musical virtuoso Dylan Young (Way Dynamic, Snowy Band, Emma Russack, Cool Sounds) to help shape the new album.

Early stages of recording took place between Skube and Dylan’s homes with Dylan serving as the primary producer and engineer on the tracks with John Lee from Phaedra also stepping in to work on album track ‘Maslow’s Pyramid’. The tracking and recording was mostly completed by Skube and Dylan with some wildcard bandmates and friends jumping in, in classic 808s fashion to fill the sonic gaps. Greatest Hits II’s seamless shifts between inner and outer worlds are thanks to creative experimentation in songwriting. The album kicks off with an instrumental that evokes opening film credits and from there on in, things head to new territories with each track. Songs traverse genre and thematic lands but the distance is always visible and reachable.

808s tape.jpg

808s & Greatest Hits is the recording project of Melbourne’s Skube Burnell. Though the project is helmed and the songs are conceptualised by Burnell, 808s & Greatest Hits’ recorded material and live shows feature a revolving cast of friends and collaborators who allow the project to take unconventional and exciting detours along the journey with Burnell at the wheel. Previous incarnations of 808s & Greatest Hits have seen Burnell collaborate with a 5-piece band and other recordings and performances have captured 808s at its most intimate and introspective from Skube alone.

The proof is in the pudding - some of the tracks deal with themes around alien abduction, self actualisation, nostalgia, reassuring messages of positivity, airport terminals and mythical adventures - 808s is out of the Cabin and into the woods.

Greatest Hits II is released today Friday December 11th via Our Golden Friend. Order the limited edition cassette tape via bandcamp HERE.

808s & GREATEST HITS SHARES NEW TRACK 'SUPER SENTIMENTAL'

December 09, 2020 by Our Golden Friend

Today 808s & Greatest Hits share their final single 'Super Sentimental' before the release of their sophomore album Greatest Hits II. The musical project of Melbourne's Skube Burnell and his many collaborators, 808s & Greatest Hits released their debut album Cabin Vibes in late 2019 and are set to continue to spin the wheels of experimentation with the release of their second album Greatest Hits II this Friday 11th of December 2020 on limited edition cassette and digital services via Our Golden Friend.

Of 'Super Sentimental Skube Burnell had this to say:

"This was a mental time capsule, anchored to some day back in 2015 where I was thinking 'hey life is pretty easy right now, it's in a really good state, I want to remember how things are at this moment'. I saw it as 'ideally, there's a sweet spot in your mid 20s where you're at peak hedonism where you have full autonomy in your life and minimal responsibility'."

808s & GREATEST HITS ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM GREATEST HITS II + SHARES SPOOKY FIRST SINGLE 'ABDUCTION'

November 25, 2020 by Our Golden Friend

Today Melbourne's 808s & Greatest Hits shares spooky new single 'Abduction', the first taste of new music from their forthcoming sophomore album. Our Golden Friend's first born child, 808s & Greatest Hits is the musical outlet of Skube Burnell and collaborators, the band released their debut album Cabin Vibes in late 2019. On 'Abduction' Skube Burnell had this to say:

"The initial demo had a dank, uneasy feel to it so I thought it would go well with some lyrics about alien abduction. I've experienced some sleep paralysis over the years which lend themselves to the imagination and I once had a vivid dream about being beamed out of my bed and being pulled out of the house through the wall. The lyrics were also inspired by Whitley Strieber's book Communion which conjured some kooky imagery."

November 08, 2020 by Our Golden Friend

Elizabeth proudly shares the special deluxe edition of her debut album The Wonderful World Of Natureon New York based record label AntiFragile Music worldwide excluding Australia and New Zealand where the deluxe edition will be released by Our Golden Friend. The album was premiered overnight by Wonderland Magazine here.

LISTEN TO THE DELUXE ALBUM IN FULL ON WONDERLAND HERE

Elizabeth's debut album was met with critical acclaim when it was released in 2019 - the album was Feature Album on community radio stations fbi radio, Syn FM, Edge Radio, Triple R and reached #1 on the AMRAP Air Charts.

TWWON was featured as the Herald Sun’s favourite album of 2019, received glowing reviews in The Saturday Paper, Sydney Morning Herald, The Fader and independent blogs and publications. Elizabeth and her 7-piece band had planned to launch the album in major cities in Australia until the COVID-19 crisis unfolded which left touring plans on ice. Since the original album's release, Elizabeth signed to New York-based label AntiFragile.

The relatively new label was founded in 2017 by music industry veteran Tom Sarig, who prior to setting up AntiFragile Music managed the careers of Lou Reed, Blonde Redhead, Le Tigre, Violent Femmes, The Drums, Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music and many others. The new deal will see AntiFragile Music release Elizabeth’s music worldwide excluding Australia & New Zealand, where she will remain on Our Golden Friend. Elizabeth joins the likes of Tia Gostelow, Wallis Bird, Jake Isaac and Reyko on the AntiFragile roster.

The release of the worldwide deluxe release will feature all the original songs from TWWON, as well as six raw and emotional piano tracks recorded by Elizabeth in her home studio during the isolation / lockdown period. The new tracks include stripped back piano versions of album favourites Parties and Death Toll + four new original songs and a stunning cover of Fleetwood Mac’s Go Your Own Way which was released and the video was premiered on Earmilk HERE.

Alongside the much loved tracks from the original album these new and raw piano tracks offer a glimpse into a small period of time and the heart wrenching cocktail of isolation, hope and vulnerability felt by all throughout 2020.

The Deluxe Edition of The Wonderful World of Nature is out Friday October 23 via Our Golden Friend (AU/NZ) and AntiFragile Music (ROW)..

Very limited copies of the original pressing of The Wonderful World of Nature on Neon Orange Vinylare available to purchase HERE. You can pre-save the deluxe digital version of the album ahead of its release HERE.

ELIZABETH PREMIERES VIDEO FOR ‘GO YOUR OWN WAY’ VIA EARMILK + NOMINATED FOR THREE MUSIC VICTORIA AWARDS

November 08, 2020 by Our Golden Friend

Today Elizabeth shares the captivating video for her cover of Fleetwood Mac's song 'Go Your Own Way'. The video premiered overnight on Earmilk who said:

"Melbourne based singer/songwriter Elizabeth isn’t afraid to go where others won’t. Whether it’s with her music, or generally in her approach to the world, Elizabeth does what she wants and she does it well. Her latest release is an example of both her eagerness and ability to truly conquer, delivering her own take on Fleetwood Mac’s “Go Your Own Way.” The song awe-inspiring for people around the world, and Elizabeth does it justice. Her powerful but gentle vocals breathe new life into the 70s song, while the minimalist approach allows the lyrics to shine and the heartbreaking story to be told."

WATCH THE VIDEO FOR 'GO YOUR OWN WAY' HERE

The video was masterfully co-directed & edited by Elizabeth herself and co-directed shot by frequent collaborator Xanthe Dobbie. Featuring Elizabeth herself and reflective and dreamlike visuals of tarot cards, family photos, flowers and snippets of life in isolation, the video manages to capture the introspection that the cover masters.

Elizabeth on shooting this gorgeous video in lockdown:

"Welcome to my isolation world. so much alone time with precious things, thinking about what I have lost and how I have grown from it <3"

Putting aside her pop sensibilities on Go Your Own Way, Elizabeth takes an introspective turn that cuts to the bone, the first taste of the new bonus tracks from the deluxe album. Stark, yet soaring, Elizabeth turns the beloved song on its head, showing her clear mastery when it comes to making gut-wrenching music her own, even when it isn’t. Elizabeth wounds with one note and provides a salve with the next, a drama queen has never felt this persona

The cover was the first taste of Elizabeth's deluxe version of her critically acclaimed 2019 debut album The Wonderful World of Nature  which will be released on Friday 23rd of October 2020.

The video heralds the news that last week Elizabeth received three nominations in this year's Music Victoria Awards for Best Breakthrough Act, Best Solo Artists and Best Album. The Awards will take place at 7pm AEST on Wednesday 9th of December 2020 at the Melbourne Recital Centre and will be streamed live on musicvictoria.com.au and broadcast on Channel 31 (Melbourne). Voting for this year's music Victoria Awards is now open and you can vote HERE.
