Melbourne’s MOONLOVER has today released his debut full-length album, Thou Shall Be Free throughOur Golden Friend / Island Records. Moonlover is the moniker of Melbourne’s Quang Dinh, formerly ofLittle Red. In tune with his occult pseudonym, Dinh releases all of his music in synergy with the Lunar Calendar, with this album release falling in line with today’s Full Moon.
Listen to Thou Shall Be Free here. See Moonlover in his hometown of Footscray, see here for details.
The psychedelic pop album is laden with singles Queen of Sheba, The Ooiee and title track Thou Shall Be Free. The eclecticism of the album journeys the listener through stories and experiences through time and space while weaving through Dinh’s subconscious. Written as an ode to observation of experiences around us, Thou Shall Be Free is the kind of proper record that tells stories through the fantasy of surreal psychedelic songs across to the great reveal of romance. Lyrically the songs read like poetry as the work in its entirety is a collection of reinterpreted nuances from the universe, including title track Thou Shall Be Free that was gifted to Dinh by the great David Bowie who came to him in a dream. Deep in slumber, Dinh was visited by Bowie who sang to him the opening line ‘Oh, oh, oh oh, Thou Shall Be Free’, Moonloverawoke and wrote the rest of the song within hours, stylistically paying homage to late pioneer.
The Ooiee changes pace with a cool and collected melody abed a driving bass line and a hooking chorus.Queen of Sheba is an offering to an ancient Ethiopian Queen, and is the perfect blend of pop functionality with intricate soundFX, trickling overdubs of colourful picking guitar. Upbeat Borderline explores the choices we make as carefree, quirky pop track. Mindbender begins with distorted synths, moving into airy open guitar lines, to intricate and multi-dimensional vocal work. Lazy Daisy is an airy, carefree love song with the summer breeze in hand. Introverted and sincere On The Day I Was Born changes pace with the piano introduction while Mekong Delta Blues touches on Dinh’s family history, opening with a recording of Quang’s father speaking on his experience migrating from post-war Vietnam. Wedding Day stylistically pays homage to 50s pop with clean arpeggio guitars, close harmonies and a Leonard Cohen-esque lyric that serves as a blessing and a warning. Laid back and easy listening Moonlover is about a midnight yearning for love.
The entirety of the album was recorded, produced and performed by Moonlover in his personal oasis Pink Slime Studios, sharing impressive recording credits with John Lee (Lost Animal, Beaches, Emma Russack) who was on mixing duties, with mastering by Joe Carra (King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Courtney Barnett, Eddy Current Suppression Ring).
As well as the completion of his debut album Moonlover had a stellar 2017, signing with Melbourne labelOur Golden Friend / Island Records - also home to artists like RVG and Poppongene - touring nationally with Saskwatch on their album tour, and is supporting Angel Olsen in Melbourne this month.

"From One Another" was directed by Tobias Willis of KEWL Studios and he notes, "this clip was a considered follow on from the previous for 'Today Tonight,' is drawing Liz's character to a subtle close. As with the other clips we were aiming to keep the video in a more cinematic space and were referencing some of those classic one takes from 60's & 70's cinema. Throughout the tracking shot each character vignette has it's own story exploring themes of loneliness, faith and friendship." IndieShuffle have called the track "a sticky sweet indie pop gem that's lush with infectious chords and vocals."
Following an Australian tour with Perfume Genius, Totally Mild will be making their way to the US for slots at SXSW and a show at Brooklyn's Rough Trade on March 19. More dates to be added soon.
Totally Mild started out as the solo project of songwriter Elizabeth Mitchell, and has now become a full blown lush pop quartet with the addition of guitar magician Zachary Schneider, drummer Ashley Bundang and bassist Lehmann Smith. With Her, the band's quasi-psychic intensity, surging forward or pulling back in seamless unison has been captured in crystalline form by producer and one-time Architecture In Helsinki member James Cecil.
As always, Elizabeth's voice is a thing of unearthly beauty, capable of soaring and swooping in shiver-inducing ways. As a songwriter she is equally arresting, addressing desires and dreams with affecting frankness.
About the new album, Mitchell says "Her is a record of failure and victory, new desire, stale romance, queer domesticity and what comes when the party is over. I was torn between a new domestic life and the impulse to tear it all away with bad choices. I fell in love, but I wrestled for independence. I was always trying to prove that I didn't need anyone; my wife, my friends, my band. Her is a document of a woman struggling with the idea of potential. We are told that we could be limitless, but we wrestle with unseen personal and structural walls."

“There’s a reason why RVG are one of the most outstanding Melbourne bands around; something effortless in being on stage, something magical in frontwoman Romy’s voice. Guitars shimmer behind powerful vocals, surging with the urgency of 80’s new wave.” – The AU Review
Acclaimed post-punk band RVG are excited to drop the music video for ‘IBM’, taken from their stunning debut album A Quality of Mercy, and release their full international tour dates including SXSW, showcases in LA and NYC, and a European tour with UK band Shame. Full tour dates are below. TonightRVG will play their third sold out show at The Old Bar in Melbourne, with support from Spotting, in what will be their final headline show in Australia before flying overseas.
The video for 'IBM' shows the band performing in a big white room, before breaking off into a date between a man (played by drummer Marc Nolte) and his old computer, which otherwise would have been really quite romantic. Watch the video for ‘IBM’ here. On the new single, singer and guitarist Romy Vager shares: "IBM is a song about someone falling in love with someone who is very obviously an old computer. I wanted to write something that was similar to something Robyn Hitchcock would write in that it makes a relatable point but does it from a ridiculous angle. One of the samples you can hear is the sound of a dentist drill. A few of our friends have said that when they listen to the song it makes their teeth itch, which was the plan.”
RVG – Romy Vager (vocals, guitar), Reuben Bloxham (guitar), Angus Belle (bass), Marc Nolte (drums) and known less formally as the Romy Vager Group – deliver a refreshing kind of honesty and intelligence that you don’t hear in your everyday garage band. Hailing from Melbourne’s northern suburbs, they released their acclaimed debut album A Quality of Mercy in 2017 which was self-recorded live off the floor at The Tote. The eight songs on A Quality of Mercy traverse through the myth of the tortured artist, the isolation of being trans, falling in love with a computer (on ‘IBM’) and the feeling of awaiting your fate on death row. Each song is played with wit, compassion and commitment, evident in singer Romy’s delivery, her “fierceness, her flow, and how clear it is she’s singing about what she knows” (The Guardian).
They four-piece signed with Our Golden Friend / Island Records who re-released their album in October, which led into a much-hyped BIGSOUND set and four nominations at The Age Music Victoria Awards – for Best Album, Best Song, Best Band and Best Emerging Act. Their set at Meredith Music Festival was one of the most talked about over the weekend, and they went on to support Camp Cope, and then Future Islands, at The Forum – one of, if not the most iconic venue in Melbourne. RVG have since signed with Isla Angus at ATC Live for bookings in the UK/EU and Lucy Beach at Paradigm for North America.

Melbourne’s Totally Mild write songs that are lush and luxurious, polished to sparkle. Her, the band’s highly-anticipated sophomore album, is full of narrative heart, but with a Stepford sheen. Teasing out a thematic tension between the loving and the lacklustre, the domestic and the deluxe, vocalist/guitarist and songwriter Elizabeth Mitchell’s voice is crystal clear. It weaves through her band’s lyrical, immaculately considered arrangements with a dexterity that speaks volumes of the band’s capacity to let melodies grow, breathe, and take shape.
Beginning as memos, fragments, and demos, Mitchell develops the songs alongside Zachary Schneider(guitar), Lehmann Smith (bass), and Ashley Bundang (drums, who has since left the band to work on her other bands and replaced by Dylan Young). Producer James Cecil (Architecture in Helsinki, Super Melody), whose sense for shiny pop production, helped the band track the album live in-studio over a day and a half.
There is a push and pull in the arrangements on Her that signals a truly deft sense of melody and structure; Mitchell cites Schneider’s sense of melody, Bundang’s lyrical playing, and Smith’s affinity for restraint as key in each song. There is never a sense on Her that a part or a melody was added lightly: the songs morph and meander with a kind of breathing life, afforded to them through the band’s musical communication.
Her is undoubtedly a collection of songs that, while diverse and musically complex, cherry-pick from decades of the best of pop music. However, beneath the sparkling surface of each song, there is often a seed of doubt, a slight sense of melancholy. Even an unbridled love song like “Pearl”, which declares “I thought that I would want so many in my lifetime/But now the only one is you”, eulogises the first moments of falling in love: “I will never have you again/Not in the same way/Not with a new face”. No emotion on Her is singular.
Mitchell says of the album’s title that many of the songs meditate on the female experience: of love, of domesticity, of surveillance, of bliss, and of anxiety. The portrait of Mitchell’s mother that hangs in the corner of the album’s cover signals the overarching sense of the feminine that hovers over Her. Mitchellnotes that while the second-person address on the record often functions to address a lover or a friend, sometimes the ‘you’ she addresses is an aspirational self: they’re subtle, reflexive bids for self-empowerment.
Mood rises and falls expertly on Her: “Working Like A Crow”, which was originally written for a children’s choir (whose voices are heard in the distance on the track), is simple in its self-sufficiency and assertiveness. It’s followed by “From One Another”, a eulogy for a toxic relationship, where Mitchell sings “Sigh of relief, no grief/But you wonder which of you will end up winning.” The ebb and flow of the album is exemplified by its switch from Side A to Side B: Mitchell’s love for piano balladry is showcased on Side A closer “Lucky Stars”, while side B jerks the listener awake and makes a case for staying home with “TodayTonight”.
On Her, Totally Mild are in dialogue with their debut, the critically acclaimed Down Time. Down Time very much mused on what it meant to be a young person who found solace in ill-advised parties and people, while Her is a wiser record. Album closer "Down Together" is about leaving those things behind, and it’s no coincidence that in the song’s refrain — “You can only get down together”— “get down” refers to both a collective excess and a collective sadness. Although Her has its moments of melancholy, it’s a reflective, meditative sadness that replaces Down Time’s lethargy. On Her, Totally Mild move through light and shade with smoky, silky finesse.

As February’s New Moon dawns today, Melbourne’s mystic psychedelic rocker Moonlover is excited to release the video for his latest single ‘Queen of Sheba’. ‘Queen of Sheba’ is the third single from his forthcoming debut album Thou Shall Be Free due out Friday March 2 through Our Golden Friend / Island Records.
Gazing upon the visuals in the video, you come to understand how they are the perfect accompaniment to the track, begging the question: which came first, the video or the song? Journey through the kaleidoscopic world of Moonlover’s inner psyche as the visuals play on the luring bass lines, with each frame emphasising a synth line or overlay. The video for ‘Queen of Sheba’ was filmed by Alifeleti Toki, with animation and editing by Dinh at his own Pink Slime Studios.

Jess Ribeiro’s songs are cinematic in scope: it’s music that travels, across deserts like a Western, through city streets like Film Noir. Narrative and poetic, Ribeiro’s lyrics are rhythmic and evocative, conjuring images that are dimly-lit, but nonetheless electric.
Jess’s debut album Kill It Yourself (August 2015, Barely Dressed/Remote Control) was produced byMick Harvey, a founding member of The Birthday Party and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, whose production for PJ Harvey drew Ribeiro’s attention and admiration.
Lush pop angels Totally Mild can reveal the next single From One Another from their stunning new album Her, which is out via Chapter Music worldwide on Friday 23rd of February. The track was premiered by UK site The 405.
Totally Mild are also excited to announce Australian album launch dates for May/June, after they return from SXSW and other US dates, (including a great Our Golden Friend showcase in New York) in March/April.
Totally Mild's Elizabeth Mitchell says "From One Another is about the toxic energy of a relationship that has outstayed it's welcome. It's the point where you realise that staying with someone out of habit is stopping you from moving forward."
