RVG SIGN TO OUR GOLDEN FRIEND ANNOUNCE RE-RELEASE OF A QUALITY OF MERCY + ALBUM LAUNCH TOUR

RVG_WEB_by_Ian_Laidlaw-70.JPG

RVG are incredibly excited to announce their signing to Our Golden Friend and the re-release of their debut album A Quality of Mercy.

When RVG first self-released their debut LP, A Quality Of Mercy, there was no press release. No music video. No proper band photo. No image to uphold. No narrative to forward.

Instead, there were just two guitars, bass and drums. Eight songs. Classic songs. Songs recorded by the band, live off the floor, at Melbourne’s iconic rock’n’roll pub, The Tote. Songs that leant on the band’s heroes —The Go-Betweens, The Soft Boys, The Smiths— whilst never sounding like homage or pastiche. Songs hitting that sweet spot between light and dark, employing guitars both angular and jangling. Songs passionately sung by Romy Vager, the eponymous leader of a band once called, in full,Romy Vager Group.

Vager had arrived in Melbourne, from Adelaide, in full Goth wardrobe, as a teenage runaway. Her first band, Sooky La La, was built on anger, discordance, screaming. They found no following, and routinely cleared rooms. In the wake of their demise, Vager committed to write songs that people would actually like, and want to listen to; to match alienation to melody, introspection to big refrains.

She was living upstairs at The Bank, an erstwhile recording, rehearsal, and performance space housed in an old bank building in suburban Preston. The Bank was a scene unto itself: JaalaGregor and Hearingall played there, practiced there, lived there. Dwelling in this big house, surrounded by musicians, hearing their songs coming through the walls, Vager couldn’t help but be inspired.

Vager committed to playing her first show, downstairs at The Bank, in September 2015, launching a tape of solo songs that hadn’t actually been pressed. Angus Bell (Drug Sweat, the Galaxy Folk), Reuben Bloxham (Hearing, Gregor and fellow Bank resident), and Marc Nolte (Rayon Moon, Latreenagers), were recruited to be a one-off backing band. But once they’d played together, one time, without saying it, they knew all they were a Group.

RVG's members are no strangers to the Melbourne scene, and they utilise their experience and talents to sublime effect both on their recorded music and in their incredible live shows. RVG have quickly become everybody's favourite band and for good reason, they deliver a refreshing kind of honesty and intelligence that you don't tend to hear everyday in your local garage band.

RVG's album A Quality Of Mercy will be re-released on October 20, 2017. Scroll below to listen to their single 'A Quality of Mercy', pre-order their album and view their tour dates!

Island Records Australia are proud to announce a label partnership with Our Golden Friend Records.

Our Golden Friend, run by Lorrae McKenna, is an independent record label based in Melbourne, Australia.  McKenna was most recently the Promotions and Marketing Manager at Remote Control Records.  Joining Remote Control Records in 2013, Lorrae was instrumental in re-invigorating the label’s Australian roster of artists, signing and developing acts such as Courtney Barnett, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Methyl Ethel, The Murlocs and many more.

McKenna departed Remote Control in October 2016 and has focused her time on building the label alongsideher management roster, which currently consists of  Jade Imagine, Jess Riberio, RVG, Totally Mild and Poppongene.

McKenna says: “I am super excited about the new Our Golden Friend partnership with Island Records/UMA. It’s a beautiful collaboration of two different world’s colliding and I feel that I have a huge opportunity to help the artists I love, to work and grow and reach larger audiences."

Michael Taylor, Managing Director, Universal Music Australia adds:  “We are thrilled to partner with Our Golden Friend.  Lorrae and her label will continue to operate in their own unique style and creative direction and will be able to tap into Island / UMA whenever it makes sense for them to do so.”

Together with the announcement, comes news of the label’s first signing, Melbourne four piece RVG. Hailing from the northern suburbs of Melbourne and having just been announced on the line up for Meredith Music Festival, Our Golden Friend will re-release RVG’s debut LP 'A Quality Of Mercy' which the band self-released in early 2017.  The band will also play Bigsound (see below).

POPPONGENE RELEASES 'BELGRAVEY' VIDEO AND ANNOUNCES HEADLINE SHOW

Our golden haired honey POPPONGENE is excited to share her video for 'Belgravey'! Produced by Tobias Willis A.K.A KEWL, the video is POPPPONGENE's love-letter to the leafy life she lived in Belgrave with her beautiful ginger cat Monty, her bff Toby and her partner Lochy . It's a handy-cam documentation of their secluded and slow hills life and the process of settling back into city life.

“The 'Belgravey' clip is like a little time capsule for me. It documents the beautiful hills life of myself, Loch, Toby and Monty - and the process of packing up and moving back to the big smoke. It's basically dad-cam footage of whatever was going on around us at the time. Oh also, we're UFO hunters... " - Poppongene (Sophie Treloar)

POPPONGENE is also very excited to announce their headline show at The Grace Darling Hotel on Wednesday the 9th of August with Melbourne's dreamy Culte and 808s and Greatest Hits! With FREE ENTRY and vibes vibes vibes, why the heck wouldn't you treat yourself?

POPPONGENE RELEASES NEW SINGLE - 'ESKY' + ANNOUNCES MELBOURNE SINGLE LAUNCH

Our favourite beautiful babe from the the hills POPPONGENE is excited to share her brand new single 'Esky' with the world today! 'Esky' is the third single release following her dreamy single 'Belgravey' and features on a very special limited edition 7" vinyl which is available for order via bandcamp right now.

POPPONGENE LAUNCH ESKY AT THE FITZROY PINNACLE ON MAY 17TH

"I wrote this song last year when spring was slowly creeping in, but up in the hills we’d still get a serious frostiness in the mornings and evenings. I had this real winter hangover, my house felt a damp and I was sick of the daily grey skies. Essentially Esky is about wanting to spend quality soul-warming time at the beach and being in the sunshine with your mates. I just love the fertile, can-do attitude that summer brings on, so I guess it’s just about the ~summer vibe~ and all that it brings." -Poppongene (Sophie Treloar)

This year, we're excited to announce that Our Golden Friend will re-release Guilt Pop alongside FERLA's brand new EP Stay Posi. The double EP will be released digitally worldwide on Friday May 26th 2017.

JADE IMAGINE TO FEATURE ON MILK! RECORDS/BEDROOM SUCK 'SPLIT SINGLES CLUB' RELEASE

Milk! Records and Bedroom Suck have just announced their limited run of Split 7" singles: the two labels have teamed up to put out a limited run of singles that will house a favourite band from each roster, and OGF's own Jade Imagine is first up!

From Bedroom Suck/Milk:

Split Singles Club is a limited-edition collection of 7-inch vinyl, each pairing a track from one of Milk!’s favourite Australian artists on one side, with one of Bedroom Suck’s on the other. The idea – spearheaded by Bedroom Suck director Joe Alexander and Milk! co-founder Jen Cloher – was born out of the close familial dynamic each label has with their artists and their local communities. “We wanted to develop a project that encapsulated this family idea and also extended a hand to others,” Joe says. A significant motivating factor in the project, Jen adds, is highlighting the uniquely generous spirit of Melbourne’s music scene, one that’s earning a growing awareness around the world: "I think Split Singles Club is a great reflection of how uncompetitive and collaborative we are in this town.”

GABRIELLA COHEN SIGNS TO CAPTURED TRACKS

LABEL TO REISSUE DEBUT ALBUM FULL CLOSURE AND NO DETAILS ON FRIDAY 3RD MARCH 2017

ALSO PLAYING SXSW AND VIDA FESTIVAL (SPAIN)

Gabriella Cohen is excited to announce that she has signed to Brooklyn based label Captured Tracks for a worldwide deal excluding Australia and New Zealand where she will remain on Dot Dash / Remote Control Records. The Australia-based Cohen released her debut album, Full Closure And No Details, in the Spring of 2016 and the label will be reissuing the LP on March 3, 2017.

Full Closure And No Details drew the attention of Rookie Magazine who calls Cohen a "modern psychedelic prophet who layers drawling vocals, heartache, and healing over a background of Velvet Underground-esque guitar distortion." Elle Magazine placed the album's single 'Sever the Walls' in their 'top tracks of October' list and Brooklyn Vegan said Full Closure And No Details is "an LP full of warm, smokey guitar pop." Most recently Gabriella was included in an NPR piece on the music scene in Melbourne which you can read here

Cohen is scheduled to play this year's SXSW - show details forthcoming - and is currently working on the follow up to Full Closure And No Details inside a farmhouse in Seymour (regional Victoria). When Gabriella leaves the shores of Australia to head to the USA in March she will embark on a worldwide tour which will see her play VIda Festival (Spain) as well more tour and festival dates to be announced soon.

Today Cohen is also happy to share the video for the album track "Downtown" which you can watch here:
